Since its inception in 1960-61, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been a cornerstone of MIT Muzaffarpur. Known for its strong academic foundation and practical learning approach, the department offers a 4-year B. Tech program in Mechanical Engineering and two M. Tech programs in Machine Design and Thermal Engineering. With a team of highly qualified faculty members and well-equipped laboratories, the department ensures students to gain a deep understanding of core mechanical concepts like Thermodynamics, Machine Design, Manufacturing, and Fluid Mechanics. Students are encouraged to go beyond textbooks, exploring hands-on learning in workshops and real-world industrial applications. The department boasts modern laboratories, providing practical exposure to various mechanical processes and systems. Some of the key labs in the college are Central Research Facility (Tribology and Advanced Manufacturing Lab), Computational Lab (Vasistha Narayan Singh lab), Engineering Mechanics Lab, Dynamics of Machinery Lab, Internal Combustion Engine Lab, Steam Power System Lab, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Lab, Heat & Mass Transfer Lab, and Engineering Graphics Lab.

Beyond academics, the department actively promotes research and innovation, encouraging students to work on real-world engineering challenges, industrial projects, and model development. With a strong focus on both theory and practical applications, the Mechanical Engineering Department at MIT Muzaffarpur continues to shape future engineers, preparing them for successful careers in industry, research, and entrepreneurship.
